Darling Mother

You will see by the abovethat I have arrived here O.K. My billet (or rather "Flight") is at the back of Warrior Sq very hilly and distinctly warm in army clothing but a vast improvement on Hampstead. We have a nice Mess, with little tables to accomodate 4 or 6, white tablecloths and knives forks are provided so we need no longer carry those dirty ones about with us.

I might also add that each table is decorated with ..... or flowers in centre (as you like it) + looks very posh. There is an orderly or Waac to attend to each table so altogether we are beginning to fancy ourselves Brigadiers at least . We have a mattress on our beds , 4 blankets + a pillow + not too crowded in the rooms. I think our Squadron Capt is an old Pauliane (his old school) as when I said I did swimming at St Pauls he started talking about "Jerry" meaning Driscoll of course. There is a fearful amount of work to do here; we have to get up at 6, have a cup of tea + a few biscuits + then do physical drill (in shorts) By the way, those white shorts of mine will be no use as by new order of the wing commander every Squadron is to wear its own colours and ours is blue so we have all got to get blue ones.

They have a lot of sports here including Rugby Association, Cricket (just coming) Boating and Swimming. They like everybody to goin for something so I have put my name down for swimming which will be quite pleasant in the spring and summer. In case you are alarmed about that "cup of tea" + a few biscuits I will hasten to add that we have breakfast after that, before morning parade. I am told the grub is quite good down here + there is some talk of having dinner at about 7 in the evening which will be very nice if it materialises.

By the new order issued by the General Officer Commanding District no cadets are allowed Out of the billeting area (i.e. our road until they are thoroughly proficient in the simple art of saluting, which means that they must be able to salute as smartly as Grenadier Sergeants. We are having a Saluting exam tomorrow morning + as I have never given a salute in my life I shall probably not be allowed about the town for 5 days or a week: it is therefore not much good you coming down next week end but by the one after I shall doubtless be pronounced proficient. I will write again tomorrow evening when I shall know a bit more about the place.
Tons of love and kisses
