| Sgt Kenny, Sgts Mess No14 TDS, Lake Down, Nr Salisbury Darling Mother, Now for particulars, the address is as above, we are in tents from the Boer War and much more holy than righteous. Its been pouring all day but has improved now towards evening – I took my black army boots to be repaired this morning + they will be done by tomorrow afternoon. Kempson, Jolly and Jowett are all here, Kempson came with me met at Waterloo + the other two arrived today . They didn’t know Jolly’s class so he called himself flight cadet – how long it will last I don’t know . From what I can make out this is a school for bombers + we are here until we get our wings which can take about 8 to 9 months – depending mostly on weather so that’s not so bad. Its a miserable hole - 8 miles from Salisbury the nearest station. Kempson + I had to take a taxi yesterday + the fare is 16/- so that was 8?- each – pretty bad !!! The tents are awful + the aerodrome big and straggling. Sedgwick is not here but is probably at the Handly Page Squadron at Stonchsip ?? . I haven’t done anything yet + probably shan’t be posted to a flight + instructor for some days until they thoroughly realise I’m here + I shan’t hurry them. As far as I can see Sergeants haven’t any advantages as they don’t + can’t do any work other than flying. Jowett is in my tent but Jolly + Kempson are in the flight Cadets + Officers tents – the former are swank!! They have a batman to each line of tents who cleans boots – bring in water + cleans and tidies tents etc. I am not allowed to wear any officers kit + so shall send back trench coat (strictly forbidden down here) as it will only get spoiled all folded up here. The Sgts mess is not at all bad, plenty of …. But please don’t send any parcels as they are all put in there and only excite great unpleasantness. I will tell you later on if I want them but don’t yet fully know what grub is like. Tons of kisses Your loving son Dudley |
