| Sgts Mess 6 TDS Boscombe Down Amesbury, Wilts Saturday Darling Mother, Thanks very much for letter and £1. I am glad the M.O. has acknowledged so promptly and his help will count for a lot as of course he knows the ropes best. It’s a pity Shore couldn’t do anything but as he says, there are no definite regulations laid down and so the ministry of labour are the only people who can deal with it. I’m afraid old Perrott can’t do much as of course the preparation of a pamphlet entitled “Getting students out of the Army“ is merely a masterpiece of advertisement. I am not surprised to learn Biggs has died – he was far too fat and inclined towards apoplexy but it’s a big loss to the College, as he knew his job. However his letter may help to support Johnsons application and the ….. certainly impresses the junior clerk who no doubt deals with these matters in some palatial ministry I have put in for my 11 days leave on Dec 16th they only give it on certain dates and if I get it, it will take me over Christmas, and, what is more Boxing Day , but of course I don’t know yet whether it will be granted and shall not know until the 16th when I go and ask for my pass, so its no good counting on my being home until I am home. It’s quite probable that I shan’t get it as they are only giving 4 passes to the sergeants for that date and I don’t know if I am one of the favoured few. The Sergeant major happened to come into the hut the other morning when everyone was supposed to be at work and announced that all applications for before Xmas were to go in to the Adjutant immediately, and I happened to be in hut putting on my coat And so of course rushed off for a pass form and filled it in. Jowett missed the opportunity, and the whole thing was really most unfair, as people who were doing their work stood no chance and only those who were “swinging the lead” in the hut knew of it. It simply depends on whether I was one of the first four chaps to get it in or not. I am still trying .. but its .. as the bootmaker is a hard .. to find in his quarters - he apparently isn’t a fixture in the camp . Don’t send any more parcels please , as tinned stuff is no good without hot water which is impossible to get . The cookhouse closes about 5:30 they won’t serve late dinners , worst luck and in any case the cooks wouldn’t dare send out hot water or it might be hot water for them . especially to the sergeants hut as some inquisitive person would be sure to try to find out where it came from . Ovaltine I don’t like so it would be a waste to send that . There is quite enough supplied + I can always get a beer and some cake in the canteen. We have four blankets and that’s ample as they are big and two can be doubled . Of course we had to hand in flying kit at Lake Down but I don’t miss that flying coat as I thought I should. I am not going to have …. It was not … down would come my sergeants stripes and those in the … I have in this … they work miracles and get one much …. Than anyone without . even in demobilization as we non -flying sergeants are heavy on their hands – they are hard put to it to find us jobs – and its in their own interest to get rid of useless and highly paid (?) people as soon as poss, unless they … us, when I can then try such stunts. Tons of love and kisses your loving son Dudleye |
