War news good, New instructor, about to go solo

Dear Mother,

Have been expecting a letter from you but it hasn’t arrived so am sending usual Sun letter without any answers.

The weather has been impossible for flying the last week so am having an easy time , Jarrett has got 4 days leave as his instructor is on leave but no such luck for me as mine has only been here a short time but of course when he gets it I shall have a shot but I expect by that time I shall be solo and then you don’t stand a good chance as you can carry on even when your instructor is away. Its rotten luck changing as Cook would have been due for leave by now.

The war news is certainly good, but no cause for undue jubilation as there’s still plenty of work to do In Belgium before brother Boche need squeal – he’s still on his enemies territory and therefore in no sense beaten. When these good reports come in the Sergeants are rather apt to become convivial under the influence of potent liquors imbibed to celebrate victories and the result is that one’s beauty slumbers are frequently disturbed by a terrific noise of soup at about 2 am. Such optimism is hard to resist.

I hope M. has quite got over her flu and that you are keeping quite clear of it.

Tons of love and kisses.

Your loving son Dudley
