Darling Mother

Thanks for the letter and I hope to get home on the 16th (Monday next) My pass has come through and only remains to be signed so all going well I ought to get it on Sun night. If you are putting my room ready you might also get my suit out of its put away as my fine military turnout is somewhat the worse for wear and aeroplane grease. Of course I am not yet by any means certain you know what this army is and at this last moment they might discover that there are too many passes in already and turn some down – it would be just like them. I was only officially transferred from Lake Down to here in orders last night!! Quick work. I am quite well and no flu at all here on Salisbury Plain at all though Mrs Fan… may have it on good authority that the whole Area is in the clutches of bubonic plague. Elections are raising a good deal of controversy here but soldiers are not voting for Coalitions and Conscription – oh dear no ! They are mostly voting for labour who want to help them out of the army and I don’t blame them either. I have got a job for this week as sergeant of the mess’s? Canteen. It means staying in nnn nnn nnn from 6 – 9:30 and seeing they don’t get drunk or (violent)? + turning them out on time. It’s a very monotonous job but has the advantage of carrying with it plenty of free beer!! It’s quite the thing for them to treat the sergeant and they are quite disappointed if the sergeant can’t accommodate any more. Tons of love and kisses

Your loving son
